Illinois Computer Science students are changing the world through their contributions to the computing industry and to research. This page is going to be the most up-to-date resource for all things awards (scholarships, fellowships, grants, etc.). As you will see below, there are two main types of awards - Department Action Needed and External, which is then divided into five sections based on your status as a student. Each Siebel Scholar receives a merit-based award of $35,000 in the final year of his or her graduate studies. The award is granted in addition to any other financial aid, assistantships, fellowships, loans, or other awards he or she may receive.

Targeting students who are near completion of their PhDs, the program offers training in fields outside of the student’s current area of expertise.  The goal is to introduce Fellows to the ideas, practices, methods, and cultures of other scientific disciplines, thereby exposing Fellows to new topics, new ways of thinking, and new people who can help guide Fellows toward new paths to success.   

$100,000 stipend and it provides courses and research experiences at some of the world’s leading academic institutions along with hands-on work in field-leading laboratories.

The Microsoft Research Ada Lovelace Fellowship aims to increase the pipeline of diverse talent receiving advanced degrees in computing-related fields by providing a research funding opportunity for doctoral students from groups underrepresented in computing (women, African-Americans/Blacks, Latinos, American Indians/Alaskan Natives, Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders, people with disabilities and/or LGBTQ).

The proposed research must be closely related to the research topics carried out by Microsoft Research as noted in the Research areas tab above. We are particularly interested in proposals related to Systems & Networking and AI (including Machine Learning, Computer Vision, and Robotics) as well as interdisciplinary extensions to them. Students must be nominated by a doctoral faculty member and must be a full-time student in a PhD program over the two consecutive academic years of the award or forfeit their fellowship. Students should have three years remaining in their graduate program at the time of nomination. 

Award Recipients will be selected based on their overall potential for research excellence, the degree to which their technical interests align with those of IBM , and their academic progress to-date.

In the US, fellowship recipients while in school will receive a stipend for living expenses, travel, and to attend conferences ($35,000 for 2020-2021 and $35,000 for 2021-2022).

US fellowship recipients will also receive $25,000 toward their education in 2020-2021.

The Beckman Institute Graduate Fellows Program offers University of Illinois graduate students at the M.A., M.S., or Ph.D. level the opportunity to pursue interdisciplinary research at the institute. This program is supported by funding from the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation. The stipend is financially equivalent to an 11 month, 50 percent graduate research assistantship commensurate with the pay rate of the graduate student’s home department. Funds also will be provided to each awardee to attend one national meeting to present the results of their research.

CRA-E Graduate FellowsCRA-E

The Computing Research Association’s Education Committee (CRA-E) seeks one Ph.D. students to serve as Fellows.  This is an opportunity for graduate students in computing-related fields to gain experience serving on a national committee that serves the field.  CRA-E members will select the CRA-E Fellows, with preference given to students in their third year (or later) of graduate school in computer science, computer engineering, or information sciences.  Criteria for selection include interest in undergraduate education, evidence of interest in mentoring undergraduates in research, interpersonal skills, and interest in professional service at the national level.CRA-E plans to appoint one graduate fellow per year who will serve as part of the committee, providing a graduate student voice. They will attend the annual CRA-E meeting (travel expenses funded by CRA-E), serve on a CRA-E subcommittee related to their interests and expertise, and contribute to the CRA-E Conquer site that provides resources for undergraduate research and graduate school.
