Minutes of the 2010-11 ECE Curriculum Committee (CC)

November 16, 2010

Present: Tangul Basar, Bishop, Choquette, Jones, Kudeki, Leburton, Levinson, Lumetta, Vaidya,
ECE 110 Course Directors, Marie-Christine Brunet and Patricia Franke

Minutes of the CC meeting on November 9 were approved.

The committee continued the discussion of ECE 110. The Course Director, Marie-Christine Brunet and Patricia Franke, joined for today's meeting. The committee discussed the current and historial course outlines for ECE 110, and the possibilities for removing some of the topics trom the current outline to make room for new topics, namely, problem-solving using Matlab and the Internet architecture. The Course Directors proposed two changes to the current lecture plan for ECE 110: (i) the time allocated to the topics of diodes, transistors and CMOS digital circuits should be reduced from 6 lectures to approximately 4 lectures, and (ii) 4 lectures should be devoted to the topics of sampling, error detection/correction, data compression and security/encryption and the internet architecture, representing a saving of 1 lecture compared to the current lecture plan. The time freed up by these changes will be used to discuss problem-solving using Matlab at appropriate points during the course. The Course Directors have been requested to develop this plan further, with the goal of making it effective by Fall 2011 offering of ECE 110.

The committee discussed an iFoundry course, ENG 298 User Oriented Collaborative Design in an attempt to determine the number of technical elective credits that should be allowed for this course, if any. The consensus of the committee is that, to be able to resolve this issue, additional information is needed on the technical content of the course. More information will be requested from the Course Director for ENG 298.
