Old Business

  1. Moved that ECE permit CS 498 DL1 as an advanced computing elective.  Proposer: Emre Ulusoy.   [webpage]
NB: computer engineering faculty supports this.  Passes unanimously.

New Business

  1. Moved that ECE permit MUS 499C as a tech elective.  Proposer: David Varodayan.  [syllabus][webpage]
Discussion: this is an independent study course, seems inappropriate as a tech elective.  Committee proposes that a student interested in ECE credit should seek ECE 397 or similar ECE-centered independent study credit.  The committee voted unanimously against granting tech elective credit for this course.

  2. Moved that ECE request a permanent course number for ECE 498CB.  Proposer: Can Bayram.  [proposal][syllabus]
Discussion: Content and evaluation were described.  EK: when this is a permanent course, it would be helpful if the anticipated enrollment were higher.  CB: perhaps 30.  JM: what do students say about the workload?  CB: evaluations were good.  Students spend time, but really love it.  Computer labs happen during lecture time, but there is one homework question for each computer lab.  Computer labs must be in one pre-selected EWS classroom, because licenses for Crosslight are expensive; they don't permit remote access.  EK: what will be the course number?  CB: suggestions welcome.  JM: maybe 443.  Committee votes to approve the proposal, on the assumption that the document is revised to show anticipated enrollment of 30 students.

  3. Moved that a subcommittee be formed to design an ECE 497, similar to ECE 397, but available to be taken by graduate students.  Proposer: Erhan Kudeki.
Discussion: we have a 397 and a 597.  If grad student is taking it, why is it not 597?  A: it depends on the level of the project; 497 is proposed as a project for introductory graduate students.  For example, graduate committee will not approve a 597 if it is derived from an undergraduate course.  This proposal stems from graduate students who want to take 300-level courses plus some additional work, and receive graduate credit; such a project seems inappropriate for 500-level credit, but 400-level credit would be appropriate.  JM: perhaps a group from this committee plus a group from graduate committee should write a detailed description, specifying what type of project fits as 497 versus 397.
      4. Moved that

CS498 WN can be considered for credit as a tech elective, because "I think it used to be listed as CS/ECE 439

."  Proposer: Arman Tajback, Seconded: Robin Kravets.  Documentation:
