Minutes of the 2010-11 ECE Curriculum Committee

October 12, 2010

Present:  Tangul Basar, Choquette, Hu, Jones, Kudeki, Leburton, Lumetta, Makela, Mitra

Erhan Kudeki chaired this meeting.

The committee approved, with minor changes, two ECE 498 course proposals: \(i) Extending Mobile Computing Through Cloud Computing by Yih-Chun Hu and Constantine Polychronopolous, and (ii) Steve's ECE 498 requests with minor
wording changes \--\- they will present the corrected forms to you ASAP.
Also Steve is required to submit a request for a permanent version of his
course right away.

We then discussed ECE 190 per your request.  One question raised
(by me) was whether the course could be streamlined by having
a less comprehensive coverage of LC3 while still maintaining
a simple discussions of machine language and assembly language
codes and their relation to high level programming.  Another question
was whether programming and gate level implementation issues could
be covered in a tightly coordinated and orchestrated versions of
revised ECE 190 and 290.  Perhaps that could be done in a way that
could simplify the first course (ECE 190) and yet not compromise on
topics to be covered over the course sequence by selecting ECE 290
applications and examples to be more directly computer architecture
related.  Also, Doug Jones asked whether a top-down
approach would better serve our students in place of the bottom-up
approach of ECE 190, but the discussions quickly converged on in
favor of a mixed approach where several cycles of going back and forth
between the bottom and top levels might work best (in a just in time
fashion) over a two course sequence like the one suggested above.<!-- 		@page { size: 8.5in 11in; margin: 0.79in } 		P { margin-bottom: 0.08in } -->_Extending mobile computing through cloud computing_
