Minutes
- Called to order at 2:04pm.
- Minutes from Sep 8, 2016 were approved.
- Varshney described the proposed ECE498LV course.
- The committee and Varshney discussed whether a limit on enrollment was needed and concluded it was not.
- The committee and Varshney discussed the prerequisites, whether they were all necessary, and how non-ECE students might fulfill them. The course requires background in probability and linear algebra/systems. There is likely no equivalent for ECE 210, so non-ECE majors interested in this course would need to take this ECE course.
- Chew asked where students that take this course would apply the knowledge gained. Varshney stated that the material is fairly broadly applicable, from power grids to water networks to brain functionality.
- The committee approved the proposed ECE498LV.
- Vlasov described the proposed ECE498YV course.
- A significant overlap in the first half of the proposed course and ECE 452 was discussed. Vlasov will reduce this overlap in subsequent offerings of the course.
- The committee and Vlasov discussed how/where students would get some of the quantum theory required for some of the topics covered in the course. Vlasov will consider adding more background on quantum in subsequent offerings, using space freed up by reducing the overlap with ECE 452.
- The committee pointed out two small oversights in the documentation of the proposed course (the grading scheme needs to add to 100% and the days the course is to be offered needs to be specified as Tuesday and Thursday.
- The committee approved the proposed ECE498YV pending the two minor corrections pointed out above.
- The committee briefly discussed ECE498LG. However, Gao was not able to attend the meeting and so the committee decided to table the discussion until the following week.
- Makela brought up the topic of technical electives, which will be discussed at a later meeting of the committee.
- The meeting adjourned at 2:38pm.
