Student designers or developers with a passion for social change

The Codeathon, taking place in Chicago on Thursday, October 18 – Friday, October 19, 2018, will bring together undergraduate and graduate student designers from across academic disciplines to generate innovative applications to address a pressing global issue.

Undergraduate and graduate students in good academic standing and currently enrolled at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

All submissions must be a visual or graphic representation of data that you have permission to use. Two examples of data you would have permission to use are public data and data that you have collected yourself. The data you use can be quantitative, qualitative, textual, visual, geographic, and so forth.

You must have been involved in the generation of the visualization. If any colleagues helped create it, you must obtain permission from them to submit the visualization in this competition.

All awards will be announced at the Scholarly Commons Open House on October 9th.

First place: $500
Second place: $300

Eligible graduate students will have already completed their first year of Ph.D. level studies in the areas of computer science, computer engineering, system architecture, electrical engineering or a related area.

Fellowships support Ph.D. students who are researching topics that will lead to major advances in the graphics and high-performance computing industries and who are investigating innovative ways of leveraging the power of the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU). NVIDIA particularly invites submissions from students pushing the envelope in artificial intelligence, deep neural networks, autonomous vehicles, and related fields. The fellowship offers support for one year.

With this program, they seek to fully support a small group of the most promising PhD students in AI and ML who are interested in making the long-term, large-scale impacts of AI a central focus of their research. 

They encourage applications from 5th-year students, who will be supported on a year-by-year basis; students who will be starting their PhD in Fall 2019; and students with pre-existing funding sources who find the mission and community of the Fellows Program appealing.

Eligibility criteria include: the ability to obtain a DOE "Q" clearance; research in areas of interest to national security; the candidate must have been awarded a Ph.D. (minimum 3.5 undergraduate and 3.7 graduate GPA preferred) within the past 3 years at the time of application or will have completed all Ph.D. requirements by commencement of appointment (Oct. 2017); and, candidates seeking their first national laboratory appointment (pre postdoc internships excluded). Truman Fellowship candidates are expected to have solved a major scientific or engineering problem in their thesis work or will have provided a new approach or insight to a major problem, as evidenced by a recognized impact in their field.

$111,200 salary + benefits, 3 year appointment.
