Arrangement:

Will be cataloged using NADA, a web-based cataloging system, that serves as a portal for researchers to browse, search, compare, apply for access, and download relevant census or survey information.

The metadata for the item will be encoded using Microdata, a WHATWG HTML specification used to nest metadata withing existing content on web pages.  This will allow search engines, web crawlers, and browsers to extract and process the Microdata from our web page and allow users to better access our collection.

Metadata/Microdata HTML5 tag:

  • Dataset_Key
  • Title (name:Text)
  • Provider (contributor/creator/producer:Organization or Person)
  • Description (description:Text)
  • Date Uploaded (uploadDate:Date)
  • Publish Date (datePublished:Date or DateTime)
  • Dataset Purpose (text:Text)
  • Methods of data capture (about:Thing)
  • Geographical coverage (contentLocation:Place)
  • Geographical location (locationCreated:Place)
  • Temporal Coverage (temporalCoverage:DateTime or Text or URL)
  • Data quality (question)
  • Data Storage type (fileFormat:Text or URL)
  • File Size (contentSize:Text)
  • Number of Records (amountOfThisGood:TypeAndQualityNode)
  • Number of Species (amountOfThisGood:TypeAndQualityNode)
  • Additional Information (text:Text)
  • Papers written as a result (citation:CreativeWork or Text)
  • Link (contentURL:URL)
  • Pictures (associatedMedia:MediaObject)
  • Keywords (keywords:Text)

There will be NULL values, as each dataset does not have have all of this info at origin, but will strive to maintain these standards.

We're expecting datasets to come in varioius formats, but we want a preservation copy and an accessible copy (encoded in xml). plan to encode metadata in xml (dublincore)
