Summer employment for research assistants is dependent on the availability of funds for the project to which the assistant is assigned. It may also be contingent on the presence during the summer of the project supervisor. Summer employment for teaching assistants is limited to the amount of the summer teaching budget.
Renewal of Funding
Renewal of an assistantship or fellowship is based solely on the academic progress and performance of the student, performance of the work of the student, and obligation by department as determined by original letter of recommendation. The award of funding is based on the degree program to which you applied. Assuming academic progress remain satisfactory, the department intends to offer an assistantship until your graduate degree program is completed (based on the timelines as outlined in the CS Graduate Student Handbook). Renewal and/or continuation of funding may be affected if a change to the degree program is approved by the department during the period of time of the award.occurs.
Proficiency in English
Applicants whose native language is not English are required to submit a minimum score of 50/60 on the Test of Spoken English (TSE or UIUC campus SPEAK) exam or a score of 24/30 on the TOEFL iBT spoken section to be awarded a Teaching Assistantship. Also, International non-native English speakers who have not completed a degree in an English speaking country are required to submit scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) as a requirement of admission. The minimum score must be 570 (paper exam score) or 230 (computer based exam score), 79 on the TOEFL iBT or 6.5, including a minimum subscore of 6 on all four modules of the IELTS exam. The Department of Computer Science has no authority to waive these requirements.
