Renewal of an assistantship or fellowship is based solely on the academic progress and performance of the student, and subject to availability of funding.  Assuming academic progress remain satisfactory and funding is available, the department intends to offer an assistantship until your graduate degree program is completed (based on the program-specific timelines and milestones as outlined in the CS Graduate Student Handbookon the graduate programs website).  Renewal and/or continuation of funding may be affected if a change to the degree program occurs.

Applicants whose native language is not English are required to submit a minimum score of 24/30 on the TOEFL iBT speaking section or 8 on the IELTS speaking section in order to be eligible to hold a teaching assistantship.  Students Enrolled graduate students can also take the campus OEAI test (minimum score of 4.0 required by the school) within their first semester of studies.  Students who decide to complete the OEAI exam will not be eligible to hold a teaching assistantship appointment upon arrival.  This requirement is an Illinois State Law, so the School of Computing and Data Science has no authority to waive it. Dates of appointment for assistantships for a fall term are August 16- December 31; for a spring term January 1 – May 15.  The acceptance of an appointment requires that the student to be present on campus and available to the supervisor during the appointment dates.  Failure to be present may result in the termination of or non reappointment in an assistantship.

  1. Maintaining a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.00 for each semester as a CS graduate student

Students given a teaching assistantship (TA) will have a formalized orientation program to attend that is offered by the University's Center for Teaching Excellence.  This orientation is designed for all first time teaching assistants at the university and helps prepare students to be effective instructors and leaders to our undergraduate students.  In addition, the Department School of Computer Computing and Data Science requires all first-time TAs (for Computer Science) to register for CS 591 TA seminar (1 credit hour) prior to or concurrently with their first TA appointment.   Please see your TA assignment letter and contract for more details.

All incoming graduate students should plan to arrive two weeks prior to the start of the term to complete all necessary paperwork, especially International students new to the United States.   Per

Per current Homeland Security legislation, International students may arrive no earlier than 30 days prior to the date listed on their visa eligibility form.  When making plans to arrive, the student should be aware that university housing should be arranged well in advance.  The department recommends that new International students visit the International Student and Scholar Services Office (ISSS) website. This site contains useful information for incoming International graduate students.  

First-time graduate student employees at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign must also complete HR employment documentation before starting their graduate assistantships/hourly work responsibilities. Please note if this documentation is not completed by the start date indicated on your letter of appointment, the effective start date of your appointment (and pay period) will be the date when necessary paperwork is completed at the school HR office.
